Digital caliper is an instrument of linear measurement dopted of a cursor that slides in a ruler. He was designed to take external linear measures by contact. He also can measure internal dimensions, dephts, rebounds among others, eliminating the interpretation of the reading.
Each instrument has your benefits and constraints. I will compare some of these points with the dials (time markers) analog and digital ones.
The analog dial is the one thta has pointers. It is analog, because we interpretate the value of the hour comparing the position of them with screen and the indication is a continuous function, this way we put a lot of our capacity of interpretation on ths simple act.
The digital dial has no pointers. We read the hour value directly in the screen. This approach eliminates the need of interpretation of the value of the hour that stay more uniform (doesn't matter who is gonna read) and need less efforts for that.
The previous paraghaphs induct us to the fast conclusion that the digiatl dial is preferable than the analog one. However this conclusion it is not, by the way, the most correct one.
What time is it is an information not relevant for a lot of people. Usually, what we wish is to know how long it takes to get to the time that matter to us. How long does it take until teh end of the class or for the begginning of a movie theather, for example. The analog dial allow us to interpretate ths inofmation with no effosrt. And eliminate the need of calculations.
Looking o this point of view, the analog caliper is prererable in the production lines/machining, beacuse helps the professional to make the calculations of how much material stll need to be removed, for example. The digital caliper has your space in the sections as: quality control, inspection and metrology.
For refference, the scales of this simulator as graduated in millimeter and in tenth inch.
A devide increase the distance done by the cursor and it shows in a screen made of liquid cristal. One advantage of this geometry is to allow the possibility of commute the measure showed in the hundredth millimeter, inch tenth-thousandth and fractional inch. Another advantage is the possibility of adjustment of the instrument in any point the way of you can check the difference between measures, helping the inspection of teh tollerance of several pieces with no need of interpretation of each one, for example.
The digital caliper, by the way, cannot substitute the micrometer , because its precision (imprecision between value read and the real) is bigger than the one of teh resolution (smaller measure showed by an instrument).
