Direct vernier and retrograde vernier classification

There are two possibilities for the construction of the vernier, named ‘ direct vernier’ and the ‘ retrograde vernier ‘.

N divisions of the ‘direct vernier’ (10) correspond to N-1 divisions of the main scale (10-1 = 9)

Direct vernier

The most common find, the N divisions of ‘direct vernier correspond to the N-1 divisions of the main scale -figure 1.

Retrograde vernier

In the ‘retrograde vernier your N divisions correspond to N+1 divisions of the main scale (the vernier of the simulator of goniometer is the retrograde vernier) -figure 2.

The retrograde vernier is commonly used in instruments that the main scale move itself and the vernier is fixed like the goniometers with vernier.
